Price situation in the consumer market

Information on a consumer price index and deflation level in March, 2006 is presented

In March, 2006 the actual value of a consumer price index made 99,7 % (in 2005 – 101,6 %). About it it became known from the message of department of macroeconomic forecasting of Ministry of Economics of Ukraine.

As it is noted in the message, the deflation was caused to reduction of prices of the majority of the goods of food group (as a whole for 0,5 %) as this group has the greatest specific weight in a consumer basket (64,3 %), namely: meat and a bird (for 1,9 %), eggs (for 6,5 %), milk and dairy production (for 1,7 %), vegetative and butter (respectively for 0,8 % and 0,2 %), vegetables and potatoes (respectively for 3,8 % and 1,2 %).

It is necessary to note that for years of independence of Ukraine the deflationary tendency in March was observed only in 2002 (0,7 %) when as a result this year in general left deflationary (a consumer price index made 99,4 % December by December). For January-March of this year the consumer price index made 102,7 % (in 2005 – 104,4 %).

Deterrents which influenced inflation in March, were, in particular:

* a stable situation in the sugar and fuels and lubricants markets owing to the actions of the Government directed on control of a rise in prices in these markets;

The government managed to agree with the oil refining enterprises on the eve of spring and field works. Also the Ministry entered since 15.02.2006 sugar export licensing for the purpose of prevention of excessive export and stabilization in domestic market of sugar (the Ministry resolution About modification of the resolution of Cabinet council of Ukraine from December 30, 2005 of No. 1304).

* reduction of the cost of the goods of meat group in connection with reduction of demand of the population by meat production because of the beginning of a preeaster post.
