The unusual biotechnological tomatoes which are considerably different on color from traditional, were created by experts from John Innes’s British research center and their colleague from Italy, Germany and the Netherlands. Color, however, a side effect, and the main thing – the contents.

Therefore magicians from John Innes’s center used the latest developments of genetic engineering and forced tomatoes to develop this substance (the necessary genes the flower a lion’s pharynx shared). Such attempt, by the way, was undertaken and earlier, but for the first time it crowned a victory: 2,8 mg antocianina on gram (both in a peel, and in fruit pulp).

For check of effectiveness of new tomatoes scientists made experiment on the mice having cancer. One group used the usual food, the second – I go with addition of "classical" red tomatoes, the third – food with an additive of new violet fruits. Animals from the third group it appeared more resistant. It is one of the first examples of metabolic engineering which opens possibilities for health strengthening by diet correction – one of authors of work professor Katie Martin from John Innes’s center speaks. Certainly, before such tomatoes will appear in shops, scientists will need to carry out many additional researches. Let’s tell, not clearly, how many the antioxidant from each eaten fruit can take a human body and whether such appreciable curative effect, as at mice will be reached.
