In this article it is a question of the most real alternative fuel which natural gas is. It has a number of advantages in comparison with traditional liquid fuel. Scientists of Lutsk state technical university converted diesel engine D-240 for work on natural gas. Operation of the engine on this gas showed technical, economic, raw, ecological and social advantages in comparison with liquid-fuel engines.
Inventors argue that transfer at least on a food by natural gas will give to a part of the Ukrainian diesel park considerable economic effect. Costs of re-equipment of one engine will pay off in 9-12 months.

The first consequences of environmental pollution by cars were tested on themselves by inhabitants of the largest megalopolises of Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo. Therefore in the USA and Japan the first acts directed on restriction of harm from use of motor transport were adopted.

The most real alternative motor fuel is the natural gas having a number of advantages in comparison with traditional liquid fuel. While use of gas engines in Ukraine is insignificant, small scales of production from the point of view of an economic benefit dictate not need of creation of original designs, and only possibility of converting of liquid-fuel engines in gas with ensuring their maximum unification with the base. In gas engines with spark ignition scientists of Lutsk state technical university were engaged in search of technology of re-equipment of diesel engines.

On new, advanced technology in university laboratory diesel engine D-240 was converted in the gas engine for work on natural gas and tests are carried out it.

At once they showed some obvious pluses of a know-how.

Plus the first – technological. Experimental tests of the converted gas engine included motor researches at the electric KI-4893 stand of the STATE THREAD. The engine stably worked at all modes, creating much smaller noise and vibration in comparison with a diesel engine. Thus its capacity and fuel expenses practically corresponded to "diesel" level, and the length of life of such engines will be not smaller, than at diesel engines.

Plus of the second – economic. The new engine works at fuel which is twice cheaper, than diesel. Inventors argue that transfer at least on a food by natural gas will give to a part of the Ukrainian diesel vehicle fleet considerable economic effect. Costs of re-equipment of one engine pay off in 9-12 months. Further the owner with such engine will get profit. For confirmation of it we will provide such data. For the beginning of 2008 cost of liter of diesel fuel made 3 UAH. 50 kopeks. Cost of 1 cubic meter of natural gas (that corresponds to liter of liquid fuel) at automobile gas-filling stations – 1 UAH. 30 kopeks (that is is cheaper in 2,7 times).

Re-equipment of diesel engines in gas engines can be carried out in the conditions of the motor transportation enterprises. Developed by scientists of Lutsk the technology differs from similar (used in Western Europe and Japan) smaller expenses at re-equipment.

Plus the third - raw. According to the Organization of the countries – exporters of oil (OPEC), oil stocks on a planet allegedly will suffice till 2020 and only in the separate countries – to the 2040th. And it is much more stocks of natural gas.

Ukraine is provided with own oil resources only for 5-10 %. Natural gas in the conditions of our country takes a leading place among other types of alternative motor fuels on several indicators. It and considerably smaller cost with oil fuels, and comparative ecological purity of exhaust gases, and high quality as motor fuel (octane rating more than 100 units).

Besides, the inventor considers, the new engine will have good indicators and and at work on generating and biogas. That is on the fuel received from renewables, for example, from a waste of a silvicultural complex.

Plus the fourth – ecological. Gas engines can defuse considerably ecological tensions especially in the cities: at their use, by results of tests, as a part of emissions contains much less such harmful substances as oxide of carbon and hydrocarbons, and absolutely is absent soot.

Converting of diesel engines of the Ukrainian production in gas engines will give the chance to leave on level of requirements for toxicity of exhaust gases of the Euro-2 standard which undertook to carry out our state, and in the long term – and on level of requirements of "Euro-3". And it automatically means decrease in an incidence of the population.

Plus the fifth – social. At introduction of the technology developed by Lutsk scientists, on the cars made in Ukraine (in particular by Bogdan buses of Lutsk automobile works), instead of Japanese diesel engines it will be possible to establish engines of the Ukrainian production. From here – increase in quantity of workplaces on domestic motoro-and the avtomobilestroitelny enterprises.

Scientists of Lutsk university are sure that gas engines will be widespread soon. The common sense and elementary logic persistently bring to such conclusion. Well, it is necessary to hope, what exactly they are "pistons" of the engine of progress …
